Cleaning up Cotton in California

The Sustainable Cotton Project (SCP) is a California based nonprofit promoting agricultural and environmental sustainability in California's farm-rich Central Valley. With more than 10 years in the field, SCP has built connections with growers, consumers, manufacturers and retailers to help develop and promote environmentally responsible agriculture and products. SCP directs an award-winning agricultural program and internationally recognized Cleaner Cotton™ marketing campaign.

Our current programs include:

The Cleaner Cotton™ field program

Cotton growers enroll their field into the program and SCP supports best management practices, eliminating the most toxic chemicals used in conventional cultivation and producing high quality cotton fiber.

The Cleaner Cotton™ marketing campaign

We educate consumers, manufacturers, fashion designers and retailers about the advantages of Cleaner Cotton™ and work with brands to incorporate our fiber into their product lines.

The San Joaquin Sustainable Farming Project

With cotton prices being relatively low, many growers are decreasing their cotton acres and are favoring crops that bring a higher economic return, such as almonds and alfalfa. SCP has adapted by expanding its outreach beyond cotton cultivation to include almonds and alfalfa. We work with Central Valley alfalfa, almond and cotton farmers to implement biologically based management practices and reduce the use of the most harmful agricultural chemicals.

SCP promotes practices that will help to sustain farming operations for years to come while protecting environmental and public health in surrounding communities.
