Royal College
of Art Organic Cotton Design Project
United Kingdom
Marks and Spencer have co-sponsored an organic
cotton project with The Royal College of Art fashion and
Textiles department, London. The Sustainable Cotton Project
and Katherine Hamnett are co-sponsors of the project. Students
of the 2 year post-graduate design program will design organic
cotton collections using certified fabrics donated by the
industry.
The purpose of the project is to develop new
fabric treatments and styling for organic clothing which
go beyond the current organic image and restrictions of
the apparel industry.
The Sustainable Cotton Project initiated the
idea for RCA collaborating with the organic cotton industry,
and helped co-ordinate the connections with Katherine Hamnett
and the textile suppliers. Katherine Hamnett, who is one
of the name designers working with Marks and Spencer products,
was able to secure Marks and Spencer sponsorship, and will
be the external tutor for the project. Marks and Spencer
have agreed to provide shop windows to display the best
outfits from the project.
Outfits may also be featured in the final
degree fashion show at RCA in Spring 2001. This is a highly
covered media event, attended by fashion industry representatives
and international press who scout for up and coming talented
designers. By working with leading international fashion
colleges, SCP hopes to educate and influence future designers
about the importance of organic fibers, bring modern and
creative styling to organic clothing, and gain more publicity
and recognition for organic cotton.
